Nestled in the heart of the picturesque Kennebec River Valley sits the town of
Skowhegan. Settled in 1773, it’s brimming with American History yet is host to
modern businesses such as SAPPI Fine Paper, New Balance Shoe, Howard P. Fairfield,
and Redington Fairview General Hospital.
Skowhegan is also nationally known as the home of Senator Margaret Chase Smith,
the first woman U.S. Senator. The Margaret Chase Smith Library houses the Senator’s
memorabilia and serves as a museum and educational center on her life and career.

The Skowhegan Town Office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 4:30pm. The Town Office will
be closed on the following holidays in 2010:
- New Year’s Day - Friday, January 1
- Presidents Day - Monday, February 15

- Memorial Day - Monday, May 31
- Independence Day - Monday, July 5
- Labor Day - Monday, September 6
- Veteran’s Day - Thursday, November 11
- Thanksgiving Day - Thursday, November 25
- Day After Thanksgiving - Friday, November 26
- Day Before Christmas - Thursday, December 23
- Christmas Day - Friday, December 24
The Skowhegan Transfer Station has changed to it's Winter hours. These hours
are as follows:
- Monday - Closed
- Tuesday - 7am to 3:45pm
- Wednesday - 7am to 3:45pm
- Thursday - 7am to 3:45pm
- Friday - 7am to 3:45pm
- Saturday - 7am to 3:45pm
- Sunday - Closed
