Organized by the Maine Geographic Alliance in partnership with the National Parks Service and the National Geographic Society, this event is part of the larger National Parks BioBlitz, with more than one hundred national parks across the country celebrating biodiversity in parks and wilderness to commemorate the National Park Service Centennial.
During the BioBlitz, teams of students, teachers and the general public will join forces to discover and document the flora and fauna of Freedom Field Trails in Skowhegan. From 9:00am to 2:00pm students from the Marti Stevens Learning Center will investigate the species which live in the water and land ecosystems of the forest along the Kennebec River.
Part scientific endeavor, part festival, and part outdoor classroom, BioBlitz provides a unique opportunity to work alongside leading experts to discover, count and document the living creatures in the forests and parks; to contribute to the park’s official species lists; to explore interconnectedness of plants, animals, the environment, culture and our daily lives; and to help protect the extraordinary biodiversity in our parks. With top scientists as their guides, participants will discover that our parks and trail system are more than tourist attractions and recreational spots, but also living laboratories rich in biodiversity.
